DENIM ON DENIM ON DENIM

Oh man, just like a true 80’s kid, denim makes me so happy… the texture, the rips, the fades, it’s all so much fun. So you can imagine my excitement when the denim on denim trend hit the industry in a big way. Ever since it has, I’ve been dying to do a fun styled shoot showcasing the trend and WE FINALLY DID IT. Yaaaasssssssssss! :::tosses confetti in the air:::

I had been wanting to do it for months but when I saw the cover of Glamour with Mila Kunis dressed in all denim, I knew it was time. I already had all the pieces in my couture closet and they were just waiting to be paired together and photographed. When you pair denim with even more denim, there are a few rules to mind:

1.) Keep the washes different between the denim pieces. If you’re going with a true blue wash for your jeans, pop on a lighter wash for your shirt. We went with a darker wash for Mackenzie’s jeans, a super light wash for her shirt, and a mid-wash for her jacket to tie it all together nicely.

2.) Keep the weight and texture different between the pieces as well. While we went with a distressed and heavy weighted jean, we kept the shirt in a nice light chambray material. This adds interest and dynamic to the outfit and stops it from looking too matchy-matchy. Remember that you always want complementary pieces, not perfectly matching.

3.) Stop at the clothes. On everything that is holy, don’t add a denim heel or denim hat. It’s just too much and can start to look super 80’s if you’re not careful. I wanted a warmer denim on denim look, so I added the brown hat and shoes to keep it welcoming. Glamour went with a cooler look by adding silver metallic accents to Mila’s look.

I wanted to show you the process behind the shoot and even let you in on it through a behind the scenes video we filmed during the shoot! Miss Mackenzie is a 2016 Senior from The Woodlands High School and I was so happy to have her in the studio with my new lighting style! We had an absolute blast that day and I can’t wait to show you more of what we’ve been up to this summer!

And here are a few of the final images! I hope you enjoy!
